DoE Enrollment Drops 3%--Charter School Enrollment Up 2%

Department announces 2020-21 enrollment figures for public and charter schools

Hawaii's public and charter schools combined enrollment for school year 2020-21 totals 174,704 students, compared to 179,331 last year, a difference of 2.6 percent.

News Release from Hawaii DoE, September 11, 2020

​HONOLULU — Hawaii's public and charter schools combined enrollment for school year 2020-21 totals 174,704 students, compared to 179,331 last year, a difference of 2.6 percent. This year, Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools enrolled 162,491 students and charter schools enrolled 12,213 students.

In school year 2020-21, the five largest HIDOE public schools by grade level are:

High Schools (grades 9-12): 

  • Campbell (3,079), Waipahu (2,809), Mililani (2,620), Farrington (2,365), Maui (2,100)

Middle (grades 6-8) and Intermediate Schools (grades 7-8):

  • Mililani Middle (1,684), Waipahu Intermediate (1,289), Ewa Makai Middle (1,262), Kapolei Middle (1,151), Maui Waena Intermediate (1,100)

Elementary Schools:

  • August Ahrens (1,237), Holomua (1,078), Ewa (995), Waipahu (953), Keoneula (943)

The smallest HIDOE schools in the state include: Niihau High and Elementary (15), Maunaloa Elementary (40), Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind (58), Kilohana Elementary (67) and, tied for fifth, Linapuni Elementary (89) and Waiahole Elementary (89).

The five largest charter schools are: Hawaii Technology Academy (1,337), Kamaile Academy (893), Ka Waihona O Ka Naauao (741), Kihei Charter School (713) and the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences (711).

The five smallest charter schools are: Kanaka (33), Ke Ana Laahana (46), Ke Kula O Niihau Kekaha (55), Hakipuu Learning Center (56) and Halau Ku Mana (113).
