Love Has Won

News Release from Maui PD, September 7, 2020

On September 7, 2020 at about 3:20 p.m., the Maui Police Department received notification that the Love has Won Cult, that had been on Kauai was en route to Maui.  It was reported that leader Amy Carlson (44), Jason Castillo (45) and Miguel Lamboy (42), all from Colorado where scheduled to arrive at the Kahului Airport.

The three arrived on Kauai about a month ago and rented a house.  During their stay in Kauai,  several protests, vandalism and small fires had been reported.  As a result, Law Enforcement intervened to ensure the safety of the group. On Friday,  September 4, 2020, the protests escalated and the group ultimately decided to leave Kauai for their safety.

On September 7, 2020 at about 4:50 p.m.,  Carlson, Castillo and Lamboy were contacted at the Kahului airport by Officers of the Maui Police Department.  While filling out their travel forms, screeners discovered they had reservations at a non-approved location.

Castillo related there was a big misunderstanding and that it was in the groups best interest to return to the mainland. It was further related that eleven (11) more group members were traveling from Kauai to Oahu, then on to Maui to meet with them.

Coordination was made with multiple agencies, and all fourteen group members voluntarily  returned to Colorado.

This was a joint effort, thank you to all involved:

Love Has Won escorted to airport

TGI Sept 7, 2020

After three days of nearly nonstop protests at their Wainiha rental property, 15 members of Love Has Won received a police escort to Lihu‘e Airport Sunday in two waves.

Members of the religious nonprofit exited a rental house in Wainiha around noon on Sunday en route to the airport with a Kaua‘i Police Department convoy, including leaders Amy “Mother God” Carlson and Jason “Father God” Castello, who were later observed arriving on Maui.

Eleven additional members were escorted by police from the Kaua‘i Inn in Niumalu to the airport, including members who were still completing their 14-day, state-mandated quarantine, at 4:41 p.m.

Applause rang out from protesters and neighbors in Wainiha and Niumalu who sat down across the street to watch as the escort drove off.

protests turned rowdy Friday night, with reports of a firework being shot toward the house and damage to a brand new Honda Pilot that sat in the driveway. It is unclear whether the damage to the car and residence were done by protesters or members of the group.

Mayor Derek Kawakami arrived in Wainiha Saturday evening, telling protesters the county was negotiating with Love Has Won to leave the island. Five of seven members from the rental property left later that evening.

The brand new Honda Pilot, with a cracked front windshield and no back window, was towed away with nonessential belongings from the Kaua‘i Inn, as it was deemed too dangerous to drive.

The 11 members were said to be boarding a 6:55 p.m. flight to Honolulu Sunday, and as heard on the police scanner around 5:36 p.m., officers were ensuring members boarded the flight….

National Guard Blocks N Shore Kauai after Window Smash at Home Rented By Cult

CB: … Kauai police and the National Guard sealed off much of the North Shore with roadblocks Saturday to prevent demonstrators from joining a protest that left a house occupied by a former Colorado cult vandalized and a van belonging to the group badly damaged.

The property was attacked Friday night, according to police, after a demonstration at the beachfront home encircled the property and more than 100 protesters demanded that the group, known as Love Has Won, leave the island.

Three small fires were set on the beach that were extinguished by the Kauai Fire Department. Kauai Police Department units with more than a dozen officers and two National Guard vehicles blocked Kuhio Highway near Hanalei in two places and massed a presence at the house they were renting….

At one point Saturday, three demonstrators engaged in a shouting match with a cult member, identified as Stacy Daly, who had come out onto a second floor lanai. They demanded a dialogue with Carlson, but Daly went back inside the house without apparently responding.

“She was in tears,” one demonstrator said….

Cult member Robert Begley raged in a series of posts:

“Did you see what the locals did to our mother’s house? They smashed every window in her car. They smashed her house windows. They they threw rocks. How would you like that to happen to your mother? Your mother who has full cancer in her body and paralyzed.”

There was clear damage to the house, including several smashed windows with glass shards scattered on the ground outside. Jalousie shades appeared to have been struck by thrown objects. It was not clear how the damage occurred. Some demonstrators contended the cult had done the damage itself….

Police on the scene in Wainiha said the clash Friday night continued until about 11 p.m.Officers were ordered back to the North Shore about 6 a.m. on Saturday, one of them said, apparently because KPD was concerned the situation could get out of control.

The police strategy was apparently successful because, by late Saturday afternoon, only about two dozen demonstrators were present at the house. They complained that the police and National Guard presence had significantly reduced the turnout.

Protesters have said they will continue the action at least through Sunday….
