Press release: HAWAI‘I DEMOCRATS ELECT 2020-2022 OFFICERS

Election results also released for State Central Committee members

News Release from Democratic Party of Hawaii, August 5, 2020

Honolulu – Members of the Democratic Party of Hawai'i have elected Tyler Dos Santos-Tam to be State Chairperson for a two-year term, from 2020-2022.

“I am looking forward to leading the party through an exciting election season, including a critical presidential election,” said Chair Dos Santos-Tam. “It is more important than ever that we come together as a party to move our country and our state in the right direction. Mahalo to the members for giving me this opportunity to support the party and our candidates.”

Outgoing Interim Chair Kate Stanley said, “Congratulations to Tyler and best wishes on a successful year. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the party members for their support and patience as the Party completed Precinct Elections, a Party-run Presidential Primary, and our virtual convention, all while making adjustments for COVID-19.”

The State Central Committee, the Party’s governing body, also selected the following officers to round out the Party’s executive team:

  • - Vice Chair - Colleen Kelly (from Kawaihae, Hawaiʻi Island)
  • - Secretary - Natalia Hussey-Burdick
  • - Asst. Secretary - Aria Juliet Castillo
  • - Treasurer - Larry Smith
  • - Asst. Treasurer - Kendra Oishi

Chair Dos Santos-Tam, a 32 year-old resident of Kakaako, recently finished his term as President of the Young Democrats of Hawaii in May. He is also concurrently the Coordinator for Hawaii for Biden, a position he has held since March.

Chair Dos Santos-Tam, Secretary Hussey-Burdick, and Asst. Secretary Castillo are all part of the “millennial” generation, and their election to high office within the Party heralds a shift toward bringing in more youthful energy within the State’s dominant political organization.

In conjunction with the vote for Chair, Party members also elected two members of different genders from each of the State’s 25 Senate Districts to form the State Central Committee, the governing body of the Party. They also elected Bart Dame and Amy Monk as Hawaii’s representatives to the Democratic National Committee.

The election was conducted by consultant Merriman River Group.
