Roughly 99 percent of Hawai`i’s businesses, 69 percent of our private jobs, and 57 percent of our payroll come from small businesses. In Hawai`i, small business is really big business. They create the jobs that support our families and connect us to the hope of a better future for our keiki and mo`opuna.
In order to create jobs and strengthen the economy, we must improve the business climate in Hawai`i.
Government, by itself, cannot create the jobs that fuel our economy, but as Governor, I can make it easier for those who do.
And it all starts with listening.
That is exactly why I met with more than 120 small business owners throughout the state over 100 days. And these entrepreneurs - representing all of our islands - are helping me to shape an economic action plan that will create jobs and strengthen Hawai`i's economy.
As Governor, I will:
- Cut red tape and unnecessary regulatory burdens
- Keep taxes low to promote a business-friendly environment
- Invest in human capital to compete in the global economy
- Develop new economic sectors in naturally competitive areas
- Transform Hawai`i into a world model for clean energy
- Accelerate infrastructure modernization projects: airports, harbors, highways, and broadband
Our state has the highest tax burden in the nation, and the State Legislature tries year after year to raise your taxes even more. Government should not be taking more money away from you and think that it can spend your money better than you can. I have opposed new taxes and will continue to do so.
I am committed to keeping down the financial burden on our working families and small businesses, preserving open markets, increasing competition and cutting red tape.
Please spread the word to your family and friends, and step forward with your voice and your vote to cultivate a brighter future for Hawai`i.
Aloha ke Akua,
Duke Aiona
