Panos Prevedouros, candidate for Mayor, summarizes the fiscal record of the Hannemann/Caldwell administration….
“The recent press release from the city is yet another example of why Honolulu needs an engineer and not more of the same from politicians who have left our city in a complete mess.
“While Congressman Oberstar and Mayor Hannemann might have you believe the rail project is a “premier transit project”, the FTA scores actually say the opposite: The priority of the proposed Honolulu rail is rated Medium and the capital cost is rated Low. “The sewer fix and the EPA consent decree (these are two different things) are likely to cost about $4.5 billion. Add $5.5 Billion for the rail and Oahu taxpayers face a $10 Billion fiscal liability. For a city with a typical capital improvement program (CIP) of no more than One Billion dollars per year this spells mismanagement.
“The rail project and the mismanagement of sewer and water mains leaves Honolulu with record tax increases, chronic homelessness, crumbling infrastructure, and some of the worst roads in the country.
“And let's not forget corruption. In the last few months Hannemann and Caldwell are frantically dolling out projects and bullying trash exporters and the PVT landfill in order to favor their campaign bankrollers, with disregard for the city's needs. Here is an example. Problem: City needs traffic congestion relief. Hannemann/Caldwell Solution: Build a $100 Million traffic and transit building with two stories of parking!
“In the anticipated special election, voters will have an opportunity to put an end to the status quo and elect and engineer who will manage the city professionally and have the public interest as his top priority.”
