Message from UH President about forthcoming COVID-19 changes

UH News, March 12, 2020

This message was shared with the students, faculty, and staff of the 10-campus University of Hawaiʻi system on March 12, 2020.

Thanks to all of you who have shared questions and provided input over these last days. This has been a tumultuous week, with many changes in the COVID-19 situation in Hawaiʻi, across higher education and globally, accelerating into today.

I will send a longer message later today with more details. But at this point, I want to let you know that, out of concern for the safety of our students, faculty and staff, the University of Hawaiʻi will be moving our classes online after spring break, effective Monday, March 23. Other changes will also be announced.

Please stay tuned for more details.

HNN: A number of students HNN talked to on Wednesday weren’t thrilled with the news, expressing concern that some classes might not be possible online.  “The labs don’t translate online,” said senior Megan Johnson.  Student John Sadorra added, “I don’t like it at all. I think learning should be in a classroom.”

SA: Hawaii Pacific University, which just resumed after its spring break last week, had made no announcements regarding a transition to online courses or any closures as of Wednesday afternoon.
