DJOU WORKS TO FIX HONOLULU’S WASTE SHIPPING PROBLEM

Washington, DC — Congressman Charles K. Djou (HI-01) today expressed his concern regarding the municipal waste buildup in Honolulu to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and received verbal assurance that the matter would be resolved as quickly as possible.

Congressman Djou speaks with Secretary Vilsack

“I am troubled by the municipal waste piling up in Ewa, waiting to be shipped to Washington State.  I personally expressed my concern to the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, today and received assurances that this matter will receive attention at the highest levels of the department,” stated Congressman Djou.  “The waste piling up in Ewa benefits no one and I want to see this problem fixed now.”

Hawaiian Waste Systems was granted a contract by the City and County of Honolulu to ship waste to the mainland last year.  The shipment of Honolulu's waste has been repeatedly delayed by permitting issues with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Today, Congressman Djou spoke with both Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Assistant Secretary for Congressional Affairs Krysta Harden about this issue plaguing Honolulu. Djou received verbal confirmation that this issue would be resolved quickly.
