Akina article in Wall Street Journal strikes a nerve

Tapping into a sentiment felt around the country, a commentary by Keli'i Akina published this past weekend by The Wall Street Journal generated hundreds of comments and was even picked up by the Drudge Report.

In his article for the Journal, which has 2.8 million readers, the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii president explained why so many Hawaii residents have been leaving Hawaii over the past few years — and, hint, it's not because of the weather.

Headlined "'Aloha' Increasingly Means Goodbye Thanks To High Taxes," Akina's commentary was the most read article over the weekend by the newspaper's readers, who as of yesterday had submitted more than 500 responses online. It also was a hit with readers from far and wide, who saw the article featured on the Drudge Report, one of the largest news-aggregator websites in the world.

Among those who reacted positively toward the article was the Republican National Committee, which forwarded it to everyone on its mailing list. The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, of course, is nonpartisan, but we were happy for that recommendation and would be thrilled if other organizations did the same.

The publication of Akina's commentary in The Wall Street Journal was a great way to close out 2019, and we hope to see many more such achievements in 2020.
