Kahuku Community Responds to Honolulu Police Department Press Conference

News Release from  Ku Kai’a Kahuku, November 15, 2019

Kalaeloa, Hawaii, November 14-15– Deputy Chief of Police McCarthy made several unfounded accusations in today’s HPD Press Conference. He claimed that the protestors harassed a police officer, rocks were thrown, and an officer was punched in the head. We are still unaware of when any of these incidents occurred and have seen no video evidence.

“We appreciate the police presence for our community’s safety and would like to clarify that there were a few officers instigating aggression towards the crowd. We’d like to bring this information forward to Deputy Chief of Police McCarthy and set the record straight” said Neva Fotu.

The intent of the Kahuku community is to safely exercise our first amendment rights.

We agree with Deputy Chief of Police McCarthy that we do not want this to escalate.

The best way to deescalate the situation is to get the facts straight. The community will be hosting three informational sessions: Monday in Haleiwa, Tuesday in Hau’ula and Thursday in Kahuku from 6:30-8:30 next week. We invite all to come and listen, learn, and take action together as a community.
