Town Hall Meeting: Soaring Electric Bills in Kapilina

STATE REPRESENTATIVE MCDERMOTT AND SENATOR FEVELLA TO HOST TOWN HALL ABOUT SOARING POWER BILLS IN KAPILINA

News Release from Hawaii Republican Caucus, Oct 15, 2019

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – Representative Bob McDermott and Senator Kurt Fevella will host a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019, to address soaring electric bills at Kapilina Beach Homes in Ewa Beach. The meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Iroquois Point Elementary School. Refreshments will be served.

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, renters have been shocked by recent electrical bills for mid-July and mid-August that were much higher than usual and, in some cases, topped $1,000. Following a pause in billing and a review, the property owner says the billing was done correctly. Hot temperatures, a longer 35-day billing cycle and some rate increases over the past year may have contributed to the larger bills.

According to HECO, the average, non-solar residential customer in Ewa Beach paid $279 in August at a rate of 28.5 cents per kilowatt hour. But Kaplilina Beach Homes are not part of the HECO power grid. Instead, residents here occupy about 1,400 former Navy homes at Iroquois Point, so they run under an aging power system built in the 1960s to serve that area.

McDermott's office has fielded more than 100 calls and emails on the controversy. He hopes that next week's meeting will be able to finally address some of the concerns. "We hope to provide residents with clarity on what exactly they are being charged per kilowatt-hour and improve the overall communication among all parties concerned," McDermott says.
