Maunakea protectors express concerns over lack of WiFi and locking Bachman Hall over the weekend

Ka Leo, Oct 12, 2019: 48 days into the sit-in… According to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Informational Technology Services, the Bachman wireless network has been unavailable since Oct. 12 at 12 a.m., but the wired network is available. The WiFi is expected to return on Monday, Oct. 14 at 8 a.m.

Shishido claimed that this was the only time that they did not have access to the WiFi.

"So its just so clean-cut, so hard to believe that this is just coincidental, and honestly it feels like they're trying to smoke us out, that they're trying to slightly force us into leaving this building," he said….

UH allowing TMT protestors to occupy Bachman Hall during weekend closure

From Kia'i ke Kahaukani, October 13, 2019

After a long meeting with several administrators, after students and community members expressed their concerns for our safety and welfare, we’ve been allowed to have the doors open tonight to get supplies, fresh air, and be reunited with our friends and ʻohana on the outside. In addition to keeping the doors open and allowing us kiaʻi to remain inside for the night (but on our own terms), campus security has guaranteed 24/7 presence to ensure the security of the building. The wifi for the building is still down, the administrators were clueless that it had happened in the first place. We don’t know if this courtesy will be extended from now on or just for the night, but being able to speak with and honi the people we love has refueled our spirits.

Administrators have committed to engaging in further, continual communication with us. Our intent with these future conversations is to build relationships, figure out how we can balance the safety and welfare of the kiaʻi and the employees we share the building with, and transform the hearts and minds of this University to forge a better institution and a better Hawaiʻi.

To anyone who’s unclear as to our commitment to Mauna Kea and UH, we encourage you to meet with us and build relationships with us so we can share, learn, and grow together.

To the community – to all those who’ve shown us overflowing aloha these last 7 weeks, and this weekend in particular – mahalo piha. Your aloha carries us, helping us rise like a mighty wave. We’ll let you know of anymore updates as they arise. In the meantime, remain kūpaʻa in fighting for Mauna Kea, in showing fierce aloha for our pae ʻāina, and for living in kapu aloha by prioritizing growth and healing.
