Cannons Fire in Celebration at Schofield, July 4th
By News Release @ 1:50 PM :: 8389 Views :: Maui County, Energy

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - As the nation celebrates its 234th birthday July 4, U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii invites the public to its 39th Annual Fourth of July Spectacular on Sills Field, here. The daylong event, starting at 9 a.m., features food, game booths, rides, music, fireworks and the chance to win prizes, like a brand new car.

For those interested in competition or burning off holiday calories, there is a one-mile run for children and 5K run for adults. Be sure to bring a camera for this event!

Between 1-3 p.m. on the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation stage, the 25th Infantry Division Band will prove that they can do more than simply play military pomp and circumstance. The 25th ID bands Lightning Jazz Project, Attitude and Show of Force will be offering up a variety of rock, classic, pop and jazz musical entertainment.

For those wanting to learn a little more about Hawaii's rich military history, self-guided walking tour brochures will be available outside the Tropic Lightning museum in the pamphlet kiosk. Audio podcasts of the walking tour can be downloaded from USAG-HI's website, http://www.garrison.hawaii.army.mil/sites/podcasts/TropicLightningCentennial.asp.  The walking tour takes visitors past a myriad of historic buildings, which are listed on the National Register as the Schofield Barracks Historic District.

The teen band Delayed Resistance will kick off the evening's events at 3:45 p.m., on the Sills Field main stage. The band, composed of military youths ages 11-18, won the 2010 Schofield Barracks Battle of the Band Competition. They play a variety of classic rock, pop, and Top-40 music.

At 5:30 p.m., feature entertainment Smash Mouth will take to the stage. Throughout the 90s, the iconic, retro-style pop band, has gone Gold and Platinum with such songs as "Walkin' on the Sun" and "All Star," selling more than 10 million albums worldwide.

The fireworks display starts promptly at 8:30 p.m. The highlight of the display comes when the 25th ID Band performs the "1812 Overture" accompanied by live cannon fire.

"This year's Fourth of July Spectacular is a great opportunity for the public to join with Soldiers and their families for a day of food, fun and entertainment, and also to celebrate one of our nation's most important holidays," said Col. Douglas S. Mulbury, commander, USAG-HI. "Not only does the event give us an opportunity to get together and have fun, it also provides us an opportunity to collectively reflect on the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, and their commitment to preserving the freedom and independence we enjoy today."

For those wanting to avoid traffic congestion following the fireworks display, guests are invited to stick around and enjoy local band Flux Capacitor. The band has played throughout Oahu, and is best known for taking any type of rock, punk, or any style, and making the songs their own.

All four gates to Schofield will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to midnight. Vehicle occupants, ages 16 or older, must have photo identification, and drivers must possess a valid vehicle registration and proof of insurance to enter the post.

All vehicles, backpacks and coolers will be subject to search. Attendees are reminded to leave pets and high-back chairs at home, as they will not be allowed on Sills Field. Additionally, fireworks, sparklers, glass containers and firearms are not permitted.
