The TV personality and Grassroot Institute of Hawaii president will discuss the Jones Act
News Release from Grassroot Institute, June 26, 2019
HONOLULU, June 25, 2019 >> Popular television journalist and Fox Business channel host John Stossel will discuss what to do about the federal shipping law known as the Jones Act with Keli‘i Akina, president of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, at this year’s FreedomFest, Friday, July 19, at the Paris Resort in Las Vegas.
FreedomFest is billed as the “biggest liberty conference of the year,” with this year’s event scheduled to feature more than 200 speakers, 120 exhibitors and several thousand attendees. It was started in 2002 by Mark Skousen, economist, financial adviser and best-selling author and presidential fellow at Chapman University.
Stossel’s interview with Akina will be part of a panel titled “The Dirty Dozen of Federal Laws." They will talk about how the protectionist federal shipping law known as the Jones Act has served to jack up the cost of living in Hawaii and elsewhere in the United States, and what type of reforms might offer the quickest relief.
“The Jones Act has hindered the United States economy for almost 100 years,” Akina said, “and FreedomFest will provide a great platform to encourage reform of this law.”
An expert in East-West philosophy, Akina also will give two presentations at FreedomFest, one on “Confucius, Lao Tzu, and Lin Yutang: What the West Can Learn from Eastern Philosophy,” and the other on “East and West: The Ideas That Shape the World.”
