Chairman's Message with Reflection by Pat Saiki - In Honor of President Bush

News Release from Hawaii Republican Party, December 1, 2018

We mourn the loss of an amazing man and patriot in President George H. W. Bush, who dedicated himself to serving his country in many roles; a naval aviator, a congressman, an ambassador, RNC Chairman, CIA Director, Vice President and Commander In Chief.  As a young military officer who went to deploy to the Middle East for the first time in 1992, knowing that President Bush was my Commander In Chief made me proud and honored to serve my country under his leadership.

No one in our party knows him better than Pat Saiki who served directly under him.  I am honored to share her personal memories of a President she was proud to serve

Reflections of President George H. W. Bush by Pat Saiki:

"President Bush was a very special person who served our country well in so many ways.  I first met him when he served as U.S. Special Envoy to China.  I then supported him in his first race for the Presidency.

Our friendship continued when I was elected to the U. S. Congress.  After the death of Senator Matsunaga in 1990, President Bush personally asked me to run for the U.S. Senate and offered his help to assist in the race.

I did make a special request before accepting the offer - I asked him to use his influence to reverse the policy initiated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt allowing Kaho'olawe to be used for bombing practice during RIMPAC exercises.  Recognizing the concerns of our people, President Bush did just that and ordered the cessation of the bombing.

He and First Lady Barbara came to Honolulu and held a successful fundraiser for me.  I did not win the race, but, I shall never forget the many kindnesses and assistance he offered.

After my loss, I received a personal call from President Bush asking me to return to Washington to serve as a member of his Administration.  I accepted the post of Administrator, Small Business Administration for I recognized that Hawaii's economy depends on small businesses.  It was also an honor to be named to this post - the first Asian woman from Hawaii to be so recognized.

I have lost a dear friend and the country has lost a statesman."

Let us keep the Bush 'ohana in our thoughts and prayers and may we take the time to reflect on the leadership and influence of a truly great leader.

With Aloha,

Shirlene Dela Cruz Santiago Ostrov

Chairman, Hawaii Republican Party
