National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as Punchbowl: On Memorial Day, Boy Scouts place a lei on each grave. At 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 31, you can catch the 61st annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony. Every Memorial Day thousands of people gather at Ala Moana Beach Park for the Lantern Floating Ceremony. The ceremony remembers those who gave their lives in conflict, allows for reflection on the memories of loved ones.

We invite everybody to take part in this meaningful event. The Lantern Floating is free and open to all regardless of nationality, race, faith or lifestyle. Each individual who takes part in the ceremony will bring their own unique life journey, memories, and hopes with them. Each personal experience adds to the healing and transformative power of the event. For those wishing to make prayer requests, they will be accepted from all people regardless of religious belief. A limited number of lanterns will also be made available to the public beginning at 1 p.m.

Governor Lingle issues Memorial Day Proclamation

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has ordered the Hawai‘i State flag to be flown at half-staff at all state and county buildings on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2010, from sunrise to noon, in deep respect for patriots who have sacrificed their lives for our nation, and at full-staff from noon until sunset as a symbol of our living nation. 

The Governor’s order follows national protocol, which calls for the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff on Memorial Day from sunrise to noon.
