US SPECIAL FORCES SOLDIER KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

A United States Special Forces solider has died from wounds sustained on Aug. 7 after an improvised explosive device detonated near him while performing combat control operations in Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Reymund Rarogal Transfiguracion, 36, died Sunday from his injuries, the Department of Defense announced on Monday.

Transfiguracion was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, according to the news release.

The statement gave no other additional detail, but said the incident is under investigation.

Transfiguracion, of Waikoloa, Hawaii, was born in the Philippines and enlisted in National Guard in 2001, according to Military.com.

After years of deployment in Iraq and the Philippines, he was sent to Missouri for Advanced Individual Training, and then was sent to Fort Polk, Louisiana, as a horizontal construction engineer. There, he was selected for Special Forces.

After completing Special Forces training at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Transfiguracion was deployed to Afghanistan in March. 

He has been posthumously promoted to sergeant first class and awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and his second Purple Heart, according to the report.

Other awards and decorations include the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Badge, Army Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantry Badge and Air Assault Badge.
