Peter Apo: Who Should Replace Me at OHA?

OHA Elections Media Advisory

News Release from OHA Trustee Peter Apo, August 8, 2018

As my last term serving as OHA Trustee for Oahu winds down I am compelled to opine on who might succeed me if it were up to me. The primary election on Saturday, August 11, will serve to narrow the field of candidates for the Oahu seat to the top two vote getters. The two will then face off in the General Election in November.

Instead of singling out a single candidate I am choosing to recommend that voters consider advancing both Sam King and Kalei Akaka as the two candidates to face-off in the general election for the Oahu seat.

I support Sam King’s call for a change in administrative leadership and the restructuring of OHA’s governance model bringing a sharper focus on the bread and butter issues such as health care, home ownership, jobs, education, and basic quality of life issues.

Kalei Akaka has powerful genealogical credentials whose proud family history is marked by a deep commitment to public service in government, health care, and Hawaiian spirituality. She brings a youthful and freshly honed intellect to Hawaiian politics and will no doubt carry on the Akaka family tradition of making Hawai’i a better place for everyone.

I believe both candidates grasp the importance of insuring that as Hawaiians pursuit self-determination and as OHA trustees focus on “bettering the conditions of Native Hawaiians” it is done in a way that benefits all of Hawai’i.
