POLITICO: Charles Djou ad targets Ed Case

Republican Honolulu Councilman Charles Djou is taking aim at former Democratic Rep. Ed Case, one of the two Democrats on the ballot in the May 22 special election for a vacant Hawaii House seat.

Djou is closing his campaign with a tough new TV ad slamming Case as “a typical politician who will say anything” to get elected – especially when it comes to taxes. The 30-second TV ad accuses Case of running as an opponent of higher taxes despite votes to raise them during his two terms in Congress.

“Hawaii just can’t trust Ed Case,” says the ad.

It’s the first time Djou has targeted Case in an ad. Polls in the blue-tinted district show Djou leading Case, who is splitting the Democratic vote with state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.

"Charles Djou is scared to death, desperate and knows his campaign is slipping. He's a fraud, a charlatan and the political equivalent of a 'Rick Roll' and the voters of the district can see that," said Jason Burke, Case's campaign manager. "Almost 2/3rds of the district reject his ultra conservative Republican agenda and are voting accordingly."

The spot is one of two TV ads the Djou campaign is airing during the final week of the campaign. Djou has purchased $88,000 worth of airtime this week.

Djou’s ad comes on the heels of a new TV ad from the Independent Women’s Voice, an outside conservative group, blasting Case as a “tax-raising liberal.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced this week that it was pulling out of the district after spending more than $250,000 on TV ads blasting Djou.
