James "Duke" Aiona told Republicans yesterday that they are a balancing force to the "old guard of Hawai`i politics" and challenged them to stand up for their beliefs and help their party keep Washington Place. "We cannot stop now," Aiona, a Republican candidate for governor, told delegates at the state GOP convention at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikīkī. Democrat Makes Appearance At GOP Convention: A prominent Democrat made a surprise appearance at Hawai`i's GOP convention Saturday. Before Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona, who was speaking at the convention in an informal kick-off of his campaign for governor delivered his speech, he was introduced by former Democratic state Sen. David Matsuura. GOP calls for civil unions veto: Gov. Linda Lingle says she still has not decided whether she will sign the measure authorizing civil unions, but adds she has concerns on the bill's language. "I did have a chance to read the bill and it does appear to me, on reading it, that it really is same-sex marriage, but by a different name," Lingle said yesterday during a break from the state Republican Party Convention.
