Liliha-Nuʻuanu Complete Streets community meeting scheduled on May 22

Honolulu – The Department of Transportation Services (DTS) Complete Streets Program is pleased to announce a community meeting to gather input on updated designs for the Liliha-Nuʻuanu Complete Streets project. 

The project’s aim is to identify improvements to make Liliha Street and Nuʻuanu Avenue more safe, inviting and accommodating to all users. This meeting is a follow-up to extensive community outreach that occurred in late 2017, during which initial draft concepts were shared in a series of meetings and online. Revised concepts and new alternatives have been prepared for Nuʻuanu Avenue and Liliha Street based on hundreds of community comments and technical input. At the upcoming community meeting, the project team will share the revised concepts and invite input on the preferred alternatives for the Nuʻuanu and Liliha corridors.  

The meeting will be held at the Maʻemaʻe Elementary School Cafeteria, 319 Wyllie Street, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22. The meeting will include a presentation followed by an open house where attendees can view and comment on the conceptual plans.

“We’ve heard from hundreds of people in the Nuʻuanu-Liliha area about how they would like to see these streets redesigned to make them more pedestrian-friendly and usable for everyone,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “I want to thank those who have shared their thoughts on this process so far and encourage them to come out and see the results. We want to make sure that the final design reflects the community’s input and provides safe, multimodal access for all.”  

Complete Streets is part of a transportation and design approach that aims to create a comprehensive, integrated network of streets that are safe and convenient for all people. Complete Streets is designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities traveling by foot, bicycle, transit, or automobile. The principles supporting Complete Streets move away from streets designed with a singular focus on automobiles toward a design approach that is context-sensitive, multimodal, and integrated with the community's vision and sense of place.

Community engagement is important to ensure the Department of Transportation Services develops recommendations that reflect community needs and character.
