Ramsay Wharton Announces Candidacy for Congress Enters race in Second Congressional District

(Kapolei, HI)- Former local television news anchor and reporter, Ramsay Puanani Wharton, today announced her candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District. She was surrounded by family and supporters as she filed her nomination papers at the Office of Elections in Pearl City.

“I’m running for Congress because our current Representative has shown little or no leadership on the key issues upon which our voters have made clear they want our Washington Representatives to focus: job creation, restraint in spending and lower taxes,” said Wharton.

“I have reached out and listened to the people of Hawai`i and what I have heard back is that they have suffered for too long under de facto one party rule losing hope for a prosperous future. This election year, Hawai`i has a golden opportunity to elect a new generation of thoughtful, fiscally conservative minded leaders like myself and Charles Djou. We will stand up for the people and do what’s pono, what is right. We will be a fresh set of eyes to watch out for your best interests,” she continued.

“I have built a career listening to the concerns of others and making those concerns known. I have seen and heard, first hand, how the people of our great State are suffering. Now I would like the chance to put my analytic and communication skills to use to not only take the concerns of the voters to Congress, but to help break through the partisan gridlock and get Hawai’i moving again,” Wharton added.

“Ramsay is unlike most others who have stepped forward to serve the people of Hawai`i” said Pat Saiki, former U.S. Representative and honorary campaign chair. “She understands what we are going through on a personal level and perhaps most unique to someone in politics…she actually listens to what we want done in our Nation’s Capital. She has the skills to communicate our concerns and the courage to stand up for us!”

“Together we can begin to change the course of Hawai`i’s Second Congressional District and fight to lower taxes, rein in the out- of- control Federal spending, bring back jobs and help small business owners who are struggling in this economic downturn,” said Wharton. “If I’m honored to be your next Representative I pledge to have an open door policy and work tirelessly on behalf of the voters of the district.”

If elected, Ramsay will become the first woman of Hawaiian and Chinese ancestry to serve in Congress. Wharton received her Bachelor‟s degree in Political Science from Stetson University and later attended American University in Washington, D.C. where she completed her Master‟s degree in Broadcast Journalism & Public Affairs. Recently, Wharton enrolled to pursue her second Master‟s degree at Hawai`i Pacific University in Diplomacy and Military Studies. Wharton lived and taught English in S. Korea before settling in Hawai‟i and worked in the food service industry while pursuing her broadcasting career. Her late father George P. Newman was a Kalani High Graduate („61) born in Hilo, the son of Evelyn Nit Yen Wong and Rexford Newman.

The multi-cultural and multi-issue Second Congressional District consists of rural and developing areas of the Island of O`ahu and ALL neighboring islands of Hawai`i, including Ni`ihau, Kaua`i, Moloka`i, Lāna`i, Kaho`olawe, Maui and the island of Hawai`i (Big Island).
