Yesterday the Hawai'i Republican Party Platform Committee approved its 2010 Party Platform, which will be submitted to delegates at HRP's annual State Convention next Saturday for ratification. 

In a dramatic step forward, the Committee transformed the previous 2008 platform into a “Current Issues Database” and created an entirely new one page, values-based platform based on HRP's "L.L.I.F.E. Values:" Liberty, Limited Government, Individual Responsibility, Fiscal Accountability, and Equality of Opportunity.

“This unified voice and direction for the Party will help us to win elections this year if adopted at the state convention,” said Platform Committee Chair Ryan Markham.  “These values are easy to communicate with others. We have successfully recruited members, volunteers, and candidates who are willing to stand up for these values,” said Chair Markham.

The Current Issues Database is an entirely new body that holds party positions on various issues and is designed to be updated on a regular basis.  This new approach allows the party to adopt both a timeless, easy to understand platform while addressing current issues in a flexible and responsive way.

While the approval of the values-based Platform and Current Issues Database was nearly unanimous, the Platform Committee was not without controversy.  After repeatedly violating committee rules and ethical codes of conduct, Mr. Eric Ryan was removed from the Platform Committee by a two-thirds majority vote.  Mr. Ryan also is believed to be involved with those who sent an unauthorized mailer to convention delegates.  We are investigating this matter further and will take appropriate action. 

The drafting of the values-based platform was completed with unprecedented open, inclusive, and collaborative approach. Leveraging Internet-based tools, the committee generated over 1500 emails, 236 submissions, and 204 votes cast via online polling.

The ratified platform will be voted on and finalized by delegates at the Republican State Convention on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  We hope to see you there to help usher this new era to the Hawai'i Republican Party and along with a new wave of fresh, exciting and energized Republican candidates.

Hawai’i Republican Party Sets New Course with 21st Century platform
Committee Ratifies Values-Based Platform, Unifies Party  

With only one single dissenting vote, the Hawai’i Republican Party Platform Committee overwhelmingly approved an innovative values-based platform this weekend. The proposed one page platform is based on five core Republican values: Liberty, Limited Government, Individual Responsibility, Fiscal Accountability, and Equality of Opportunity.   

The historic decision to move the platform from issues to values was completed within the first two hours of the first meeting with only a single dissent out of nearly 30 votes.  Review the ratified 2010 HRP Platform

Separate from the values-based platform will be an issues repository that will show statistics of where members stand on specific issues like same-sex marriage, the Akaka bill, or the Barrel tax. The Current Issues Database is an entirely new body that holds party positions on various issues and is designed to be updated on a regular basis.  This new approach allows the party to adopt both a timeless, easy to understand platform while addressing current issues in a flexible and responsive way. “We feel pride with what we have accomplished together as a team and we feel that at last, we can get our point across by espousing our five values up front for all to see as our platform,” said Cindy Sue Clark, platform committee delegate from Maui.  “This is unique and exciting, and in no way avoiding any issues.  Only people with issues of their own would ever dream of attacking what we have accomplished together.
