Skate park improved through private-public partnership reopening to public

Ewa Beach Community Park’s skate park received approximately $209,000 in renovations

Ewa Beach – The skate park at Ewa Beach Community Park, improved through the efforts of a private-public partnership, will be reopening to the public ahead of schedule this afternoon Friday, February 2, 2018.

The work to improve this skate park began following a gift from the Association of Skateboarders in Hawaiʻi (ASH). In early 2017, ASH installed two concrete skating obstacles at the skate park, a gift to the city valued at $37,000.

After the installation of the obstacles, the Department of Design and Construction used an in-house crew to design a project that removed 8,000 square feet of old, deteriorated asphalt pavement from the skate park and replaced it with cement that transitioned smoothly into the existing skating obstacles.

“This collaboration is a great example of how support from community groups can help us to make our public facilities better for everyone,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “The donation from ASH, and the personal coordination efforts of Mr. Chuck Mitsui from 808 Skate, not only provided additional obstacles to the skate park rehabilitation project, it also gave local skaters an opportunity to see the benefits of civic participation in action.”

The city construction work began in mid-December 2017 and was anticipated to last until April 2018. It was finished by January 2018. Haron Construction, Inc. performed this work under a $172,000 contract.

“I applaud the efforts of ASH, 808 Skate, and the city to repair and update this popular facility,” said City Council Chair Ron Menor. “This has been a high priority project for me and the many users of this facility. I’m gratified that the city has responded to our pleas and that as a result of the collaboration, we have a better facility for the community and the many users of the facility that I pushed for.”
