DJOU: STATEMENT ON THE PASSAGE OF HB444
Charles K. Djou, Republican candidate in the upcoming Hawaii 1st Congressional District special election, reacted to the Hawaii State Legislature's passage of HB444 legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples.
"Hawaii voters have spoken very clearly in support of traditional marriage. I am very disappointed that Colleen Hanabusa and the Hawaii State Legislature have clearly and blatantly ignored the will of the people of Hawaii on this issue. Unlike both Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa, my two major opponents in this congressional campaign, I will not ignore Hawaii voters and look forward to their judgment in our upcoming special election."
Colleen Hanabusa voted in favor of HB444 and civil unions. Ed Case has stated that he not only supports civil unions, but the legalization of same-sex marriage. Djou, a member of the Honolulu City Council, believes marriage is defined as a union between one man and one woman. Unlike Case or Hanabusa, Djou opposes HB444 and supports the Federal Defense of Marriage Act signed by President Bill Clinton.
