SB:  Tea Party is a mixed bag 

Their hostility to taxes and big government is being felt throughout the country, including Hawaii, but followers should be leery of hostility exhibited by some of the movement's leaders....A New York Times/CBS News poll indicates that most Tea Party followers, while angry, are not as extreme as some of their protagonists, including Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who told a Washington rally, "We're on to them; we're on to this gangster government."

(And when did the Star-Bulletin warn liberals against the "extreme hostility exhibited by" the "Bush is a fascist" progressives?  Or the 40%+ of Democrats who still believe that Bush either organized or allowed the 9-11 attacks?  Spotting SB Editors' hypocrisy is just getting too easy these days.  No wonder they are going out of business.)

Organizers estimated the crowd was more than 2,000 people who feel they are taxed enough already.  Many of them were small business owners who feel too much of the tax burden is on their shoulders.

"I voted for Barack Obama.  Sadly I was fooled by a lot of his campaign promises," said Rebecca Naus, HPU Student.  "It's sad to know so many Americans are getting a free ride and aren't paying a dime towards it."

The Hawaii rally was aimed squarely at state lawmakers—majority Democrats who approved this week an increase in the tax on a barrel of oil. The increase from a nickel to $1.05 per barrel is expected to increase the cost of gas and energy bills….

One candidate, Republican Charles Djou, attended the rally and took the occasion of tax deadline day to launch an appeal for votes. Djou is running against Democrats Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa in a special election to replace Neil Abercrombie in the U.S. House.

"When voters fill out their ballot form for the special election for Congress, they should remember the tax forms they filled out today," Djou said in a message to supporters. "The federal government is spending too much of the people's money on programs that don't work, with no plan to pay it back other than to hand the bill to our nation's children."

East Honolulu resident Sharon Shimono, who's in her 50s, said state lawmakers have not been looking at cutting costs at all. Asked to give an example of how savings could be achieved, Shimono and husband Michael Miller suggested transferring more government functions to the private sector.

"They need to look at the cost benefits of privatizing," Shimono said. "They won't even look at it. The size of government is growing much too quickly."

Marissa Capelouto came to the United States from the Philippines in 1987 to live the American Dream. Despite having a college degree she took the only job she could find working minimum wage as a mail clerk.

“I knew that in America as long as you work hard, this country will allow you to succeed,” she said. Today, Marissa is a successful businesswoman who owns Oahu Express, a shipping and trucking company. Tomorrow, she will be one of the many Tea Party attendees to protest a government that she believes is ruining the American Dream that it once promised.

“Taxes are getting so high that regular citizens just can’t make it anymore,” she said. “And the new taxes they are proposing like the barrel tax and the GET tax increase would devastate my small company and force me to lay off good hardworking people.”

Marissa is so upset about current proposals to raise taxes that she rented a bus from Kapolei to bring her friends to the event.

Hawaii Tea Parties were the grand finale of thousands of Tea Parties Nationwide.

About 300 people participated in a one mile long sign wave protest from 12PM to 5PM along Queen Kaahumanu Hwy.

Maui: 

The Maui TEA Party included a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party in Kahului Harbor followed by sign-waving along Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Protesters were joined by Duke Aiona and Alan Arakawa.

Kauai:

100 people rallied in Lihue in front of the Old County Building between 11AM and 1PM.  The group was joined by a group of students from Olelo Christian Academy across the street who recited the preamble to the US Constitution at the rally.  Participants report the response from passersby was very positive.
