City schedules meeting to update community on O‘ahu General Plan

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, February 28, 2017

The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will present its second public review draft of the O‘ahu General Plan at a community meeting on Tuesday, March 7.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at President William McKinley High School’s Hirata Hall, located on the mauka side of the cafeteria parking lot. The DPP and consultant Helber Hastert & Fee will provide an overview of the public review draft plan and then field questions and comments.

The General Plan’s first public review draft was released in November 2012, and the latest draft is the result of input from three regional meetings and a public comment period that ended in April 2013. The second review draft incorporates comments from neighborhood boards, public and private organizations, and government agencies.

The General Plan is a comprehensive statement of objectives and policies that sets forth the long-range desires of O‘ahu’s residents, and the strategies to achieve them. The public review draft updates objectives and policies related to O‘ahu’s overall growth, the economy, affordable housing, and sustainability.

Changes in the new draft include:

  • Objectives that address the impacts of sea level rise (LOL!) and climate change
  • New policies to support an age-friendly city
  • An adjustment to the island’s population distribution
  • A policy to create multi-modal communities that reduce travel and traffic congestion

For those who cannot attend the March 7 meeting, a public comment period will be open until May 7. Information about the General Plan is available at http://www.honoluludpp.org/Planning/GeneralPlan. The DPP anticipates submitting a final plan this fall to the Planning Commission, which will make a recommendation to the City Council for review and adoption.

If you require special assistance, auxiliary aid and/or service to participate in this event (i.e., sign language interpreter, interpreter for language other than English, or wheelchair accessibility), please call 768-8000, or email your request to info@honoluludpp.org at least three business days prior to the event.
