Demanding a Tax Hike, HSTA to Rally at Capitol

THOUSANDS OF TEACHERS WILL MARCH TO AND RALLY AT THE HAWAII STATE CAPITOL

News Release from HSTA, February 10, 2017

Thousands of Hawaii teachers and their supporters will march from the Neal Blaisdell Center to the Hawaii State Capitol in support of the Hawaii State Teachers Association’s efforts to secure a fair contract that attracts and retains teachers as well as to lobby for a constitutional amendment that will drastically improve funding for Hawaii’s school system. Joining public school teachers will be parents, students and community members. The march and rally are sponsored by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.

WHAT:  HSTA “Schools Our Keiki Deserve” March and Rally

WHERE:  Hawaii State Capitol, 415 South Beretania St.

WHEN:  Mon., Feb. 13, 2017

10 a.m.  March begins from Neal Blaisdell Center, going mauka on Victoria Street then left onto Beretania Street.

11 – 11:30 a.m. Chants and speakers, Hawaii State Capitol rotunda 

WHO:  Hawaii’s public school teachers, parents, students and community members will march, sign wave and rally. HSTA President Corey Rosenlee, other teachers and parents will be available for interviews.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Two makai lanes of traffic on Beretania from Victoria to the Capitol will be closed from roughly 9:20 a.m. until 11 a.m. to accommodate the large number of people participating in the march. Two other Beretania traffic lanes will remain open to vehicles during that time.

About the Hawaii State Teachers Association: The Hawaii State Teachers Association is the exclusive representative of more than 13,500 public school teachers statewide. As the state affiliate of the 3.2-million-member National Education Association, HSTA represents and supports teachers in collective bargaining, as well as with legislative and professional development issues.
