Annual Registration of Mopeds Required Beginning January 2017
News Release from County of Maui, December 28, 2016
WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai’i – The County of Maui Division of Motor Vehicles & Licensing (DMVL) reminds moped owners that effective January 1, 2017, Act 200 of the Hawaii Session Law 2016 will require significant changes to moped registration throughout the State of Hawaii.
Act 200 will require moped owners:
1. To convert their permanent registration to an annual registration. The total fees will be $33.25 which are comprised of:
a. Annual registration fee of $27.00;
b. License plate fee of $5.75; and
c. Emblem fee of $0.50.
2. To have their mopeds successfully pass an annual safety check inspection. Safety Inspection Stations may charge an inspection fee of not more than $13.24 plus tax for each moped inspection.
3. To securely fasten the license plate on the rear of the moped, displayed entirely un-obscured, and be kept reasonably clean.
4. To affix emblem on the upper right portion of the moped license plate. The emblem bears the moped license plate number and the month and year of registration expiration.
The DMVL will be mailing registration/conversion notices to the moped owners who were issued a certificate of registration beginning February 2010. These notices will be mailed out starting the end of December 2016, on a “monthly” staggered basis. The staggering will be based upon the moped’s safety check expiration month.
Moped owners may present their registration/conversion notice and current moped safety inspection certificate in person at any County of Maui DMVL office. Owners transacting by mail must include their registration/conversion notice, a copy of their current moped safety inspection certificate and the appropriate fees.
Moped owners who obtained their certificates of moped registration prior to February 2010 are required to present their permanent registration and certificate of safety inspection at the time of registration/conversion. All moped owners are required to complete the transition to an annual registration and obtain a moped license plate by the end of 2017.
Customers with any questions may contact the County DMVL Call Center at ph. (808) 270-7363.
