HAWAII GOP STATE CHAIR'S STATEMENT REGARDING THE 2016 GENERAL ELECTION

News Release from Hawaii Republican Party

HONOLULU (November 11, 2016) - GOP State Chair Fritz Rohlfing released the following statement regarding Tuesday's elections across our county and in Hawaii nei:

“Congratulations to Republican President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, and our continuing Republican majorities in the House and Senate in the United States of America!

Our nation's voters have wisely chosen a unified Republican federal government to move our beloved country in a bold new direction that will bring prosperity again to the American people.

As Hawaii's members of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Republican National Committeewoman Miriam Hellreich, National Committeeman Gene Ward, and I are extremely proud of the RNC being the only organization with a permanent field operation organizing in every battleground state. We are very grateful for the many Hawaii Republicans who enthusiastically and personally participated in President-elect Trump's historic victory through organized phone-calling to voters in battleground states as well is in countless other ways.

In Hawaii's elections, this was the first time we utilized a new party rule allowing us to endorse candidates in non-partisan races.  Our party endorsed two noteworthy non-partisan candidates: Charles Djou for Honolulu Mayor and Dr. Kelii Akina for At-Large Trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

To provide additional support to our candidates locally, the Hawaiian Republican Party organized and executed a statewide get-out-the vote campaign to identify new voters and encourage our members to support our Republican candidates as well the non-partisan candidates we endorsed.

We are especially appreciative of former Hawaii Republican Congressman Djou for his inspiring candidacy for Honolulu Mayor, and we congratulate him for running such a competitive race challenging the incumbent mayor.

Dr. Keli'i Akina convincingly won his state-wide race by over 7,000 votes!  Our sincere congratulations go out to Dr. Akina, his wife Patty, and all of his supporters. Best wishes for a successful term as our new OHA Trustee.

We are grateful that Honolulu voters heeded our call to vote down Charter amendments that would have changed the term limits for City offices and allowed the appointment of members from only one political party to the City Reapportionment Commission.

We congratulate our returning Hawaii Republican State Legislators Beth Fukumoto, Andria Tupola, Bob McDermott, and Gene Ward, who were all re-elected comfortably with majorities averaging over 60% of those casting ballots in their races. They will re-join veteran GOP legislators Cynthia Thielen and Lauren Matsumoto, who did not have general election opponents.

We mourn the narrow defeats of 5-term State Senator Sam Slom and North Shore freshman Representative Feki Pouha. They have both been outstanding State Legislators who represented the best of our party at the State Legislature. We hope they will continue their substantial involvement in the public life of our island community.

We are profoundly grateful for all of our outstanding Republican candidates and their families and supporters who sacrificed so much of their time and their personal resources in order to give voters a choice, win or lose.  Mahalo nui loa to you all."
