Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Calls for Immediate Halt to U.S. Arms Sale to Saudi Arabia
News Release from Office of Rep Tulsi Gabbard, September 21, 2016
Washington, DC—Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) and a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers are urging the President to immediately halt the proposed $1.15 billion arms sale to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The congresswoman is an original co-sponsor of H.J.Res.98, the House companion to S.J.Res.39, which is expected to go to the floor for a vote today in the Senate.
“Saudi Arabia continues to spend billions of dollars funding the spread of the Wahhabi Salafist ideology that fuels groups like ISIS, al Qaeda and other jihadist groups around the world. Saudi Arabia continues to arm and equip these groups in Syria in their effort to overthrow Assad, fueling the civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, and driven millions of Syrians from their homes. Meanwhile, they're dropping cluster bombs and other munitions targeting hospitals, schools, markets, places of worship, and other non-military facilities in Yemen, killing over 3,700 civilians so far. The U.S. must stop arming Saudi Arabia, stop fueling this fire, and hold Saudi Arabia accountable for their actions,” said Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
