Advocates for Abused and Neglected Children Needed for Oahu

Training to be held in March 2016

News Release from Hawaii Judiciary, January 29, 2016

HONOLULU, HI – Oahu’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is recruiting volunteers to be trained as advocates for abused and neglected children in the Family Court system.  Interested persons must attend a mandatory CASA training program on March 5, 12, 19, 26 and April 2 in Kapolei, Oahu.  (Candidates must attend all training dates.)

After successful completion of the training and criminal background checks, CASA volunteers will be appointed by a judge to represent a child and advocate for the child’s best interest.  Volunteers will gather all pertinent information on the case, submit written recommendations to the judge, and attend court hearings on behalf of the child.

Interested candidates must be at least 21 years old and willing to commit between four to 20 hours per month working on a child’s case.  Volunteers are typically assigned one case at a time and remain on the case until the child is placed in a safe and permanent home, which may take up to 18 months.

Attorneys who complete the CASA training may be considered for contracts as guardian ad litem or as parent counsel.

If you are interested in volunteering for this program and wish to sign up for the training, please call (808) 954-8151 for more information.
