News Release from Office of the Mayor November 30, 2015

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today that veteran journalist Andrew Pereira will be joining the Managing Director’s Office as an information officer and part of the Mayor’s communications team.

Andrew, an award winning journalist, was most recently at KITV4, where he served as a senior reporter.  His first day with the City and County of Honolulu is December 1, 2015.  His major duties and responsibilities will include writing, media relations, and working with public information officers across City departments.

“We are pleased and excited to welcome Andrew to the City and County of Honolulu,” said Mayor Caldwell.  “In my opinion, Andrew has always been one of the top investigative journalists in Honolulu, and I’ve admired his writing, his drive to get a good story, and his dedication to accuracy and fairness.  I look forward to working with him as part of the administration.”

Andrew began his journalism career in 1995 at KHNL News 8 where he rose from intern to executive producer of the station's morning news program. From August 2004 through April 2012, he reported for Fox News affiliate KHON2 News.

His major awards include the following:

• In 2010, Andrew received the Edward R. Murrow Award and the Society of Professional Journalists award for his investigative reporting.

• That same year he was honored with the Excellence Award on Community Reporting by the Chinatown Business and Community Association.

• In 2011, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences San Francisco/Northern California Chapter nominated Andrew for two Emmy Awards for his series and feature news reporting.

• In September 2012, Smart Business Hawaii and the Small Business Hawaii Entrepreneurial Education Foundation honored Andrew with the George Mason Outstanding Business Reporting Award.

• More recently, in January 2015, Andrew was named as the best political reporter on Hawaii television by Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post blog The Fix.
