Caldwell releases quarterly Roads Report

202 lane miles repaved to date in 2015

News Release from City and County of Honolulu October 14, 2015

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell today released the city’s quarterly road repaving progress report. This year through October 9, the city has repaved 202 lane miles of roads, including ongoing projects in Kailua, Kaneohe, North Shore, Kamehameha Heights, Palolo Valley, Hawaii Kai, and Portlock.  The city has repaved a total of 905 lane miles since Mayor Caldwell took office in January 2013, remaining ahead of schedule to complete his pledge to repave within five years all 1,500 lane miles of city roads that were in unsatisfactory condition in a 2012 survey.

There are currently 14 city road projects underway valued at $132 million to repave 387 lane miles of roads.  In addition, eight construction projects have been awarded with construction to begin soon primarily in the Kaneohe, Waianae, Wahiawa, and Waialua areas totaling $72 million dollars to repave 159 lane miles of roads.  And there are 35 projects valued at $317 million to repave 713 lane miles of roads in the planning and design phase with construction in coming year.  A full list of road repaving projects may be viewed on the city’s website, here.

Beyond repaving unsatisfactory roads, the city is being proactive in maintaining roads that are still in good condition.  A slurry seal (emulsified asphalt) coating is used to extend the life of good roads.  To date in 2015, slurry seal has been applied to 26.9 lane miles of city roads.

The city regularly patches potholes within 48 hours of them being reported.  Temporary pothole patching helps create a smoother ride for drivers until more substantive improvements can be made.  The city has filled 32,976 potholes this year and filled 39,951 in 2014.  The public is encouraged to report potholes to the city by calling the Pothole Hotline at 768-7777.
