Kaka‘ako SNO/SPO enforcement to resume tomorrow

News Release from City and County of Honolulu

Honolulu –Sidewalk Nuisance Ordinance (SNO) and Stored Property Ordinance (SPO) enforcement in Kaka‘ako makai will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13, 2015.  Work was anticipated to be completed on Friday, but additional time will be required due to the tremendous volume of trash encountered on public sidewalks.

Crews enforcing SNO/SPO in Kaka‘ako along portions of Olomehani Street, Ahui Street, and Ilalo Street last Thursday and Friday removed 26.84 tons of trash, 52 cubic yards of metals, 9 shopping carts, stored 8 bins of personal property, and issued 6 Summary Removal Notices (SNO).  Statistics for previous enforcements in Kaka‘ako are available here.

Today’s enforcement was postponed until tomorrow because several service providers are closed in observance of the federal holiday and do not have staff available to provide outreach to families and individuals in Kaka‘ako.  It was incorrectly relayed to media yesterday that today’s enforcement was delayed because Lighthouse Emergency Shelter would be closed for the holiday.  Lighthouse was able to provide intake today, but the city made the decision yesterday morning to postpone enforcement due to other service providers being closed for the holiday.

According to State Homeless Coordinator Scott Morishige, a total of 158 people, including 25 families, experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the Kaka‘ako area have been placed into permanent housing or shelter since August 7.  Last week alone, the city, state, and service providers were able to place 54 people, including 10 families, into housing or shelter.

Crews will resume SNO/SPO enforcement on Ohe street tomorrow morning, beginning at approximately 7:30 a.m.  Outreach workers will be present to connect people seeking assistance with the appropriate help.  A city bus will once again be on location to provide free transportation to shelters for all people seeking assistance.
