Public Comments Invited on Project to Erect Wall Around Ala Wai Canal

PUBLIC INVITED TO DRAFT EIS PUBLIC MEETING ON THE PROPOSED ALA WAI CANAL PROJECT

HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Honolulu District are holding a public meeting on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 to present the Draft Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Ala Wai Canal Project.  The meeting will be held at Washington Middle School from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The purpose of the proposed project is to reduce flood risk in the Ala Wai Watershed, which includes the neighborhoods of Makiki, Mânoa, Palolo, McCully, Moʻiliʻili, Kapahulu, and Waikiki.

There will be an open house from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., followed by a short presentation on the project purpose and need, methodology, and proposed alternative. The public will be allowed to make oral comments following the presentation. The public will also be able to review materials on the proposed project.  DLNR staff, Army Corps staff, and consultants from CH2M Hill and Townscape, Inc. will be able to answer questions about the project, proposed measures, potential impacts, and mitigation measures during the open house sessions. Written comments from the public will also be taken on forms provided.

Written comments on the Draft Feasibility Report/EIS should be submitted to USACE (pursuant to NEPA) and DLNR (pursuant to HRS Chapter 343); the applicable addresses are listed below. In order to be considered during preparation of the Final Feasibility Report/EIS, comments must include the full name and physical address of the sender, and be postmarked by October 7, 2015.
