Maui Protectors Halt Haleakala Inouye Telescope Construction Convoy
News Release from Babes Against Biotech, June 25, 2015
(KAHULUI) - After an evening of oli, pule and peaceful gathering in Kapu Aloha, a large group of approximately 200 kūpuna, mākua, 'ōiwi and keiki were able to successfully halt a scheduled delivery convoy of materials for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope currently under construction atop Haleakalā. Lines of chanting protectors held off the convoy at Maui Baseyard at Mokulele Hwy and Naki’i, where the equipment was scheduled to depart from between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
From the beginning of the evening's vigil and throughout the course of the night, a steady stream of people added their voices to the chorus of those already present, standing strong for Haleakalā while we await the Supreme Court decision.
A little after after 2:00 AM this morning, event organizers met with the Site Supervisor as police escorted the first of the trucks to arrive at the entrance to the Central Maui Baseyard. Organizers and the Site Supervisor had a brief discussion after which time he stated the drivers were going to be sent home and the delivery would be cancelled.
Those who remained throughout the night gathered one last time just before 3:00 AM after the announcement to end the vigil in pule and words of thanks. Discussions were suggested between organizers and project management, and will be announced at a later date.
