All indications are that Elections and the Governance ʻAha will take place this year!

Last March, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ (OHA) Board of Trustees made public the agency’s commitment to helping smooth the way for Native Hawaiians to build a government.

OHA strongly encouraged Native Hawaiians who have not signed up for the Roll to consider doing so. “[The] Roll will be used as the basis for verifying eligibility to vote or run in the delegate elections, and to vote in any referendum on the Native Hawaiian governing entity’s form, scope and principles.”

Efforts are moving forward with the intent that elections and the ‘Aha be held this year.

Why Now? Why Should We Care?

Nīnau a Pane (Q & A) with Long-time Nation Building Activist: Dennis “Bumpy” Kanahele

Q: Why now?

BUMPY: Why not? We’ve been denied a fair process for over a hundred years... Restoration is long overdue!

Q: Why is it important for Hawaiians to engage in the next steps of this process?

BUMPY: If you don’t, other people will make decisions on your behalf even if you don’t like it.

Q: What is the sense of urgency?

BUMPY: For some people the urgency may be for, political posturing and economic self-interest. For the majority of the Hawaiian people, the urgency is the economic and social genocide that continues to grow on the Hawaiian people and their communities.

Q: How big of a difference can one person signing up have on this process for the lāhui?

BUMPY: The big difference for me has been the achievement in my mind, body & soul for the True Love of Country.

As described in Wikipedia: Dennis "Bumpy" Pu‘uhonua Kanahele is a Hawaiian nationalist leader and titular head of state of the group Nation of Hawai'i. He spearheaded the founding of Pu‘uhonua o Waimānalo, a Hawaiian cultural village and traditional lo‘i kalo (taro paddy) agricultural restoration project in Waimānalo, Hawai‘i. Pu‘uhonua is a Hawaiian word meaning “sanctuary” or “place of refuge”.
