UH Cancer Center report released

News Release from UH Manoa, February 2, 2015

The Report on the Review of the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center was completed and officially presented on Tuesday, January 27 to UH leadership including UH Mānoa Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman, UH Mānoa Vice Chancellor for Research Brian Taylor, UH John A. Burns School of Medicine Dean and Interim Cancer Center Director Jerris Hedges and UH President David Lassner.

As an advisory report it does not represent the position of the university and is not an action plan. However, it will greatly assist the university in developing the next steps to maintain the center’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation to continue to advance the quality of care available to cancer patients in Hawaiʻi.

This report is completely unfiltered and reflects the findings of a group of objective and committed members of the UH community who care deeply about UH and the cancer center. UH leadership commends and thanks the task force members for their careful and thoughtful work.

The report’s goal was to consider the UH Cancer Center mission and performance to date. That included assessing the financial resources, human resources, facilities, policies, practices and management capabilities currently in place and necessary to ensure the future success of the UH Cancer Center in its mission to serve Hawaiʻi. The review was intended to clarify and identify the requirements for near-term renewal and long-term designation as an NCI cancer center.

UH leadership had already begun addressing some of the issues identified in the report and fully recognizes that there is an urgent need to develop a viable business and operational plan for the current situation.  The report and initial steps will be discussed at the next meeting of the UH Board of Regents Committee on Independent Audit, currently planned for February 12, 2015.
