BOE Adopts Teacher Proposed School Calendar for School Year 2015-2016
News Release from HSTA, December 03, 2014
The school calendar for 2015-2016 is teacher approved. Two members of the HSTA Negotiations Team testified the December 2 Board of Education meeting for a calendar supportive of teachers and students. The BOE was set to approve a calendar submitted by the DOE until teachers presented their proposals. The HSTA calendar was adopted because of the time it provides for quality learning for students and professional development for teachers.
As teachers, we are committed to the success of every student. We know that our voices must be present in decisions that impact our students, classrooms, and schools. That’s why Oahu high school teachers, Joan Kamila Lewis and Osa Tui, with the approval of their administrators, took steps to improve the system process and outcomes for our members and the students that we teach. During their persuasive presentation before the entire BOE, three calendars were proposed by the teachers. By the end of the meeting, one of their proposed calendars was unanimously approved. Please watch for other ways to share your voice in the upcoming months. Mahalo.
