Supreme Court Unanimously Protects Pro-Life Freedom of Speech
News Release from Life Issues Institute June 17, 2014
Ohio’s case of Susan B. Anthony List v. Driehaus has advanced to the US Supreme Court and a ruling was reached today. Former Congressman, Steve Driehaus filed a complaint against Susan B. Anthony List (SBA) alleging that during his campaign for re-election, SBA List violated an Ohio law by stating that his vote for Obamacare was a vote in favor of “taxpayer funded abortion.” He contended that this was a “false statement.” Receiving threats of prosecution, SBA List responded with a suit challenging the law on First Amendment grounds.
Today, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that SBA List can continue its challenge against Ohio’s “false statement” law, which says that a state agency has the power to decide what defines true or false political speech.
Bradley Mattes, Executive Director of Life Issues Institute, responded, “When the government silences the truth it is not only unconstitutional, but an abuse of power. I applaud this solid decision to affirm our freedom of speech. Former Congressman Steve Driehaus long ago betrayed his claim to be pro-life and has now proven to be an embarrassment to Cincinnati and the state of Ohio in front of the entire nation.”
