Long-awaited Opening of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Wait List

News Release from City and County of Honolulu

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced that the City and County of Honolulu is opening the Wait List for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.  “We recognize the need for rental assistance is great, and that families are anxious to apply,” Caldwell stated.  “With the new online application system, applying will be easier and faster than ever before.”

Online applications will be accepted from 12:00 a.m. on May 15, 2014, through 11:59 p.m. on May 21, 2014.   The use of the online application is strongly encouraged as it will provide the applicant with a receipt and it is accessible at all times during the designated period.  This method will provide equal opportunity for everyone to apply and no first-come, first-served advantage.  Only one application per household will be accepted.  For those without computer access, a terminal is available during normal business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the 842 Bethel Street and Kapolei Hale Section 8 offices.  In addition, a number of nonprofit agencies will assist applicants by providing access to terminals during certain hours.

After the closing date, only a predetermined number of applications will be randomly selected and placed onto the Wait List.  The selected families will be notified by email or regular mail.  The random selection process and shorter list will ensure that contact information is current and also provide more frequent opportunities for families to apply.

The city closed its waitlist on May 27, 2005 when over 10,000 families had applied.

Applications will be accepted online at http://tinyurl.com/q22sh98

For computer access locations, please check the city’s Section 8 webpage at http://www.honolulu.gov/dcs/housing.html
