Congressional fund race: Djou leads more than 2-1

The results are in and Republican Congressional Candidate Charles Djou's cash-on-hand total--a key early measure of political support--beats that of Democrat Ed Case by more than 2-1.  Djou, an outgoing Honolulu City Council member, also beats Senate President Colleen Hanabusa (D-Ko`olina) by more than 40-1.

Filed for the October 15 due date, the three Congressional candidates' reports to the Federal Election Commission are a study in contrast.

Djou is steadily building a campaign war chest which totaled $267,722 cash on hand as of September 30.  His campaign reports receiving $60,500 in contributions during July, August, and September--and spending only $7,830.30.  Djou is the only candidate who is debt free.

Case reports bringing in $41,413 in the quarter--but he burned through $36,866 to net only $4,547.  He also loaned his own campaign $25,000 from his personal funds which is included in his end-of-quarter $124,026 cash on hand.

Hanabusa, who announced her latest attempt at a Congressional seat October 1st, enters the race burdened by $109,241 in debts left over from her failed 2006 2nd District Congressional Democratic primary contest with Mazie Hirono.  Her "Colleen For Congress" report still lists her campaign as rural CD2 even as she announces her run for the First Congressional District in urban Honolulu.  She reports no contributions for July, August, and September and holds only $6,412 cash on hand.  Her only expense for the quarter: paying off $1,980 of her campaign debt.

The next report is due January 31, 2010.
