College of Education is in top third of education programs in the nation

News Release from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, March 13, 2014

The College of Education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has been ranked among the top 100 graduate schools of education in the nation. The college was 74th out of 245 schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report's 2015 edition. For more than a decade, the college has made it into the top 50 to 100 teacher preparation schools category, and continues to rank among the top external funding recipients for research, having been awarded $23.5 million in contracts and grants in 2013.

“The College of Education's ranking in the top third of all education schools nationally attests to the high quality of our faculty and programs, as well as our success in obtaining external funding that benefits education at all levels,” said Dean Donald B. Young. “The college continues to excel in its three major responsibilities of teacher preparation, leadership development and research. This latest ranking validates the statewide impact of the college and the exceptional work of our faculty.”

Six of the college’s programs recently received national and local recognition. Three of the Department of Special Education’s programs received full national recognition from the Council for Exceptional Children. The Master of Education in Teaching (MEdT) program earned national recognition from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation for its new multi-subject Secondary Education Initial Licensure/Post-Baccalaureate program. MEdT’s Hawaiian Immersion and Hawaiian Language programs were approved by the Hawaiʻi Teacher Standards Board.

U.S. News & World Report rankings were based on surveys and statistical indicators, including quality, peer and superintendent assessments; student selectivity; faculty resources; research activity; mean GRE verbal and quantitative scores; acceptance rate; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; doctoral degrees granted; overall rank; and specialty rankings.
