A Gallup Poll of 592 Hawaii adults released last week shows that over the past year, the proportion of Hawaii residents identifying as conservative has slipped 3.8% to 27.2%. Moderates dropped 0.6% to 38.9%. Liberals have increased by 2.5% to 27.9%.  Another 6.0% did not identify themselves ideologically.

Nationwide figures reported by Gallup show a record 23% of Americans self-identifying as “liberal”.  Another 38% are conservative and 34% describe themselves as moderate.  Nationally, conservatives outnumber liberals by 15%, the smallest margin since 2008.

Of the 50 states plus Washington, DC, Hawaii is the second least conservative and the sixth most liberal.  Liberals outnumber conservatives by a statistically insignificant 0.7%, placing Hawaii between Massachusetts and New York.  Liberals outnumber conservatives only in DC, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Hawaii.

Hawaii is also high in moderates, ranking 4th nationwide.

Hawaii has the nation’s lowest voter participation and election results which skew sharply liberal, thus indicating that the conservatives in this survey may be disproportionally counted among the non-voters surveyed.

Gallup reports its margin for error in Hawaii is +/-6%.
