DJOU: STATEMENT ON STATE SENATOR COLLEEN HANABUSA’S ENTRY INTO THE RACE FOR HAWAII’S FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Charles K. Djou, a Honolulu City Councilmember and Republican candidate for Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District, reacted to Senate President Colleen Hanabusa’s announcement today.

"I welcome Colleen Hanabusa to the race.  Like Ed Case, Colleen has run for the 2nd Congressional District multiple times before and I respect that she will be an experienced candidate for this race in the 1st District. If Colleen wins her contested nomination, I look forward to debating her on the issues," stated Djou.

Djou current represents the 4th City Council District which includes Waikiki and Hawaii Kai.  He is a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve and an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii.  Djou is married and has three children.

Case Comments on Hanabusa’s Candidacy

Voter choice is essential to good government. I welcome the real choice voters of Hawai‘i's great First Congressional will have in 2010.

We all want a better way forward for our Hawai‘i and country. I offer a proven track record in Congress, with over four years of seniority as a Member of Congress and seven years of experience on Capitol Hill.

I bring a lifetime of commitment and practical experience in our public and private sectors to the job. Voters deserve a balanced, independent, collaborative and honest approach to solving our nation’s challenges, foremost among them revitalizing our economy and balancing our national checkbook.

We seek a better alternative to the divisive, change-resistant politics of state and federal government today. I've demonstrated a proven passion for bringing our government to the people and for including all citizens in our debate and decisions.

Above all, I offer my continued loyalty first and foremost to all those I represent, regardless of party, belief, origin or power. I believe in our democracy and have deep hope for our future together.

I truly look forward to rejoining Hawai‘i’s great Congressional delegation. I have deep respect and aloha for each, and was honored to work together with them in my prior service. We agreed on most issues and disagreed on others, as should be the case in any delegation. But we always agreed and worked together as a team on matters of crucial importance to our Hawai’i, and I’m excited at the opportunity to contribute all I can to this critical work again.

We are excited to take this campaign right to the voters where they live and work, to discuss and debate my candidacy and the great issues of our day right across the First Congressional over the next year. Voters are owed no less to make this vital choice next fall.
