Legislators Silencing Professional Counselors Free Speech?
CALL TO ACTION
by Jim Hochberg, Hawaii Family Advocates
HB 1789 (Relating to Minors) is being heard in the House Joint Committee on Education and Committee on Higher Education at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 27th in room 309. (CLICK HERE FOR THE HEARING NOTICE)
This bill prohibits teachers and persons who are licensed to provide professional counseling from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with a person under eighteen years of age. (READ THE BILL)
Please submit testimony in opposition. By CLICKING THIS LINK you can submit testimony directly through the capitol website. Before you do so, please (1) read the bill and (2) review the talking points attached to this email. If you have never submitted testimony through the capitol website, you will have to create a login. It only takes a few minutes but testimony for this bill must be received no later than Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
The bill prohibits:
- Public school teachers from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with students less than 18 years old and defines that action as the practice of attempting to change a person's sexual orientation, including efforts to change behaviors, gender identity or expression or to reduce or eliminate sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward a person of the same gender, but does not include counseling for a person seeking to transition from one gender to another or counseling that:
- provides acceptance, support, and understanding of a person or facilitates a person's coping, special support, and identity exploration and development, including sexual orientation-neutral interventions to prevent or address unlawful conduct or unsafe sexual practices, and
- does not seek to change sexual orientation.
- Licensed professional counselors from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts on a person less than 18 years old and it mirrors the language for the teachers.
We have Pono Choices aimed at middle school students to encourage them to be homosexuals but this bill will punish teachers or clinical counselors who help people that do not want to have same sex attractions.
This law violates the patient-physician relationship. It violates the counselor's freedom of speech. It prevents parents and children from getting the help they desire.
I have attached some talking points from Alliance Defending Freedom that you can choose to add if you want when you submit your testimony.
Please take a moment to STAND UP for FREEDOM and submit your testimony in opposition today. And if at all possible, try to be at the capitol in person.
Thank you!
