Hawaii Family Advocates: See You at the Capitol January 15

See you at the Capitol!

Aloha!                 January 10, 2014

To all of you that participated in the coalition during special session, thank you, thank you and thank you.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2014, the Hawaii Legislature will start its regular session and we need to let them know we are still here and still watching, wanting them to serve our values.  Wednesday will be different from the special session.  There will be no hearings, no bills, no testimony.  It is an opportunity to go door to door with small groups, thanking the legislators that voted no on SB1, and letting the yes votes  know you did not appreciate that vote. On the same sex marriage bill in special session, in the Senate: everyone voted yes except Gabbard, Kim, Kouchi and Slom (Wakai excused) and in the House all voted yes except Aquino, Awana, Cachola, Carroll, Cullen, Fale, Fukumoto, Har, Ito, Johanson, Jordan, Matsumoto, McDermott, Oshiro, Tokioka, Tsuji, Ward, Woodson, Yamane (and 2 excused Cabanilla, Choy.)

In addition, I would like to ask each of you also let them know you support the following concepts which will be introduced as bills that you would like heard and passed this session:

  1. A constitutional amendment to give you the power to recall elected office holders.   You do not have that power on the state level.  After the special session many people asked me how to recall the yes voters and I had to explain we have to amend our state constitution to do that.   We want them to pass that amendment so we can vote on it.  If they don't, we will remember in November!
  2. We want a bill to get rid of the middle school curriculum called Pono Choices and any other like it and strengthening religious liberty interests of teachers, parents and students in the public school system related to homosexuality and other similar issues.
    1. We support a bill broadly protecting religious liberties that covers religious freedom in marriage, public accommodations, and school curricula for teachers, parents and pupils; and
    2. Religious Freedom Restoration Act;
  3. Fix the loop hole in the same sex marriage law that permits multiple parties;
  4. Change the same sex marriage law from "not liable for fine or penalty" to "not subject to legal action of any kind".

Please make every effort to come to the capitol between noon and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15 to meet with your representatives and senators and share this information.  We need to let them know we are still involved.

See you there!

Jim Hochberg

President
