Statehood Conference to hit local airwaves

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF STATEHOOD COMMEMORATION CONFERENCE HITS LOCAL AIRWAVES

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission is proud to announce that its successful conference, “New Horizons for the Next 50 Years,” will be broadcast on ‘Olelo channels 49 and 52 throughout October and November. The one-day conference, which took place on August 21, drew more than 2,200 attendees to look back at Hawai‘i’s history and accomplishments and discuss the direction of the state for the next 50 years. 

“The broadcast will allow every resident of our state – not just those who were able to attend the conference – to share in this special event,” said Kippen de Alba Chu, chair of the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission.  “The conference was a starting point in the discussion of our state’s future, and I hope all Hawai‘i residents will be encouraged to join in the dialogue after watching this series of programs.” 

The conference featured a host of luminaries, including Olympic Decathlon gold medalist Bryan Clay, former U.S. Department of Energy deputy secretary Andy Karsner and political pollster John Zogby of Zogby International. Workshops were held on a variety of topics, including education, media, labor, energy and Hawai‘i’s history. The conference will be aired in segments.

Opening ceremonies and keynote speakers will be broadcast at the following times:

  • Sunday, October 18 at 8 a.m. on Channel 49
  • Tuesday, October 20 at 12:30 p.m. on Channel 49
  • Monday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 52
  • Tuesday, November 3 at 6 p.m. on Channel 49

Morning plenary sessions and the unveiling of the Hawai‘i anniversary stamp will be broadcast on:

  • Sunday, October 18 at 10 a.m. on Channel 49
  • Tuesday, October 20 at 2:30 p.m. on Channel 49
  • Friday, October 23 at 8 p.m. on Channel 49
  • Monday, November 2 at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 52

A video teleconference with troops in Iraq and a discussion of military partnerships will be broadcast on Channel 49:

  • Sunday, October 18 at 11 a.m.
  • Wednesday, October 21 at 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
  • Friday, November 6 at 9 p.m.

The economic forecast luncheon will be broadcast on Channel 49:

  • Sunday, October 18 at 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 21 at 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 5 at 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 8 at 6 p.m.

The closing ceremonies and remarks by Gov. Lingle will be broadcast on Channel 49:

  • Sunday, October 18 at 2:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 21 at 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 22 at 3 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 29 at 8 p.m.
