Grassroot in China Week 1: Can the Chinese Reproduce Hong Kong’s Economy throughout China?

In a live conversation from Hong Kong, Washington D.C. and Honolulu, Grassroot Institute president Keli’i Akina kicks off his China-speaking tour by talking with Jay Fidell of Think Tech Hawaii and Grassroot Institute Policy Director Malia Blom-Hill. 

With Hong Kong as the first stop, the question of economic free markets emerges with an analysis of whether China can duplicate Hong Kong’s free market success as a model for all of China.  Dr. Akina points out that it is not only the level of investment or flow of cash that matters,  but the extent to which China assures the rule of law and individual liberty, both of which are essential to the free market. 

The group further explores whether Chinese values are compatible with the values of Hawaii and the West.  The role of law and of philosophy are discussed in the context of developing a robust free enterprise system.  View the entire episode below:
