In a conversation with Grassroot Institute president Keli’i Akina, former U.S. Congressman Charles Djou tells what it’s like to “swim upstream” as a Republican in a state dominated by Democrats. When asked how he would describe Hawaii politics to his former colleagues in the U.S. Congress, Djou said Hawaii is a combination of Louisiana and Japanese politics, hosting one of the last remaining examples of machine politics in the U.S. Djou holds that, ”Democracy is supposed to be about the competition of ideas,” but points out that In Hawaii “…it’s all about who you know.”
